The Barnster Changes Colors

I did a quickie cosmetic makeover on the 1962 XLCH this winter. Photos and a little story

I ran into an unusual problem - after bead-blasting and painting the headlight shell, it no longer worked. I hooked a ground wire to the chrome ring, and surprisingly got light. So the ground from the headlamp connector to the shell, and from the shell to the chrome ring was working, but juice was not flowing to the mounting bolt or the riveted-on mounting bolt retainer. I drilled out one of the rivets, substituted a small machine screw, and it worked fine. Now I've got to drill out the other rivets, and re-rivet the retainer to the shell. Dang - these things you would never expect to happen.

Question - were the rivets originally painted, or were they plated like on many of the old big twins?

So now the 1954 KH is up on the Handy-lift, and the real work begins...
