Swing arm part numbers

Classic short-frame models

Thanks for the info so far......Now you all have me curious. I have bought a '66 frame and what appears to be a correct swing-arm with straight tubes, and no tab for a brake-light switch. Over the past few days i have chosen not to weld a tab on, but chase the correct bracket. Chain-guards? I see chain-guards that end just in front of the shock absorbers, and others that end before the swing-arm fulcrum and some XLCHs the chain-guard extends all the way to the sprocket cover....Can someone please enlighten me?

The long chain guard is 52-55K. The short one is 56K and up. Not sure about other ones?

I noticed there is a later XL chain guard similar to the -56 but has a vertical rear mount tab and little different shape and different than the -67XLH in Jerry's post. . -56 fit all XLs until -65 at least...my book stops there. That may be the other XLCH one.

-56 was used up to and including 1966

I have a Cycle Guide magazine for April '67 reviewing the 67 XLCH, and the chain-guard goes all the way to the sprocket cover, the photos are black and white and not clear enough to scan but this photo is a 68 XLCH and its the same guard, although it shouldn't be chromed. The front bracket fits on the outside and I think it must bolt to the little lug that protrudes at the front of the swing-arm. Is that where they were bolted? It looks like the one in the middle pic in JerryR's post, part number 60303-52A, but that contradicts the tech info/part number in his third pic for the 67 XLCH. Did customers have options on which chain-guard they wanted? So much to learn

Hi Kevin56, good catch on the 67CH chainguard, the 71PB corrects it.

Hi Erik, see the below comparison of the -52 & -52A chainguards.

Hi All
I dug deeper and the 68 PB Supplement corrects the 67PB XLCH chainguard mistake. My question is, was it a mistake? Does anyone have an OP 67CH? Could Harley have tried running the -56 chainguard on the 67CH and then quickly changed their minds? Dave C what do you think?

Thanks for the update JerryR. I have 2 more questions: 1; Did the longer guards bolt to the lug that protrudes above the swing-arm at the front? It has to be there for some purpose but there is no hole in it any photos I have seen. 2; Did any of the '60's chain-guards ever crack? I have had a long chain-guard on one '74 XLCH and the short one on my current one and each has cracked on top above the front mounting bracket. The bracket bolts to the swing-arm next to the shock absorber. It's not the bracket that cracks but a section of the pressed metal chain-guard where the bracket is welded to it. I'd like to be forewarned when I start working on my '60's project.
