150MPh Speedo

Hi All
I need some advise. I put an eBay 150MPH speedo on my 68CH. It works great up to about 50mph, above 50 it starts to make a loud screeching noise and jumps up to about 80 on the gauge. It continues to make noise until I drop in speed to maybe 20. I lubed the cable, that didn't. Help. If I ride with the cable unscrewed from the gauge the cable appears to spin freely and makes no noise at any speed. Any ideas on what the problem is and can these speedos be serviced by someone who does their best work with a sledge hammer and a crowbar?
Thanks in advance,
JerryR

Hi Jerry,

It may be the gears and spring on the inside of the speedo.

I had a few speedometers (1957 Sportster and 1974 MGB) cleaned up and restored by Scott Speedometer Service in Pontiac MI. They stand by their work too.

get that speedo drive out of the trans before it breaks off and breaks your right case

sounds like too much wear between drive post o.d. and guide hole in the speedo head alum housing. it can be either axial or radial. this results in too close clearance (or contact) between drive magnets and driven needle actuating cup, hence the speed indication increases.

if the drive post starts to speed wobble from to much slop or too little grease i can scream like a banshee.
