1969 frame date code

Postby Otis » Mon Jun 18, 2018 6:19 pm

I need to buy a frame for a 1969 xlch. I found one with a date code H8 which would seem to be correct for 1969. Is there a way to confirm it’s not a 1958-59 xlch frame? I’m sure there is some minor differences.

'69 left rear down tube will have a small lug for electrical terminal block . the upper rear casting will have a bracket for the oil tank and a lump on the right side that was for the '65 voltage regulator
the '58 'and '59 had none of these
the '69 also had tabs for a voltage regulator mount on the left rear down tube

Some, but not all, ‘67-‘69 XLCH frames I’ve seen have had the wiring harness hole on the neck casting, typically seen on XLHs.

Otis,
The easiest way to determine if it is '69 or '59 is the size of the hole in the top motor mount. The '69 mount will have a large hole that is about 3/4" x 1-1/4" and the '59 will be a small hole about 3/8" x 3/4". I have 3 1969 frames. One is marked A 9, one is 09 D and the third is D 9. 1969 was a transition year getting ready for the VIN number on a boss located on the neck forging. So there are minor differences in the frames. You may want to check your serial number to see if it is late, mid or early in the production year. I will be happy to send pictures to help you sort out the identifying features. All of the frames are nice and for sale. If interested you can call me at 612-669-0967.
