68 XLCH oil line routing

Postby Richie E » Mon Oct 29, 2018 5:21 pm

I could use some help on how to route the oil feed line from the oil tank to the pump.It seems like the line runs very close to the chain. Is there a bracket that keeps it away from the chain? I'm new to Sportsters but not big twins and I'm building this 68 XLCH from a basket case and learning as I go. Also where do the 2 small vent lines near the return fitting go? THANK YOU for your help! Richie E

Sorry for the confusing question. I thought the feed line went down to the pump at the bottom. If I'm right it' s on top to the right of the return fitting and the vent is the small fitting toward the rear. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks

Let me know if these pictures work or if you need me to get some others. These are from my OP 68CH.

I had challenging moments like yours. The 68 XLCH has three fittings on top of the crankcase a little back from the rear cylinder base nut. I've included a photo which should help.

As you progress, if you are fitting the "lunchbox" oil tank used from 66-70 the oil feed out is at the bottom, the return line is about 3/4 up the rear of the tank and the vent is at the top.

The XLH from 67 on is very different and has it's feed line to the back of the oil pump and the vent line comes out of the back of the cam cover returning to the tank and the return line on the top of the right hand case. This is because of the placement of the electric starter.

Thank's so much for all your help! I'll be running a Harley oil filter kit in the return line mounted at the left motor mount. I know it's not stock, but I don't like not having one. Thanks again for clearing up my oil routing problem! Richie E

Check out the Technical : Oil Tanks article for some info on the 1966 and later tanks.
