In most applications use the lightest spring pressure that works. Less friction, cam wear..etc

Just had a look at the video posted earlier plus other ones on the same subject...

1st the cheating: they fit guides with loads of play to amplify a small wobbly phenomenon and frighten you into buying whatever they wish to sell you...

Use your head, don't just believe what is thrown under your eyes...

They also talk about excessive/unwanted spring and valve rotation :D :D :D

Actually, on a side valve, valve and spring rotation is a feature you want to promote, not hinder...

It allows your valve to wear evenly, clean your seats and distribute around the excessive heat generated by this overhanging mass of cast iron that holds your valve pockets...

See Thompson valve RotoCap borrowed by HD from some industrial engine and fitted in KR from the early 60s... 18212-60R... Basically a cruder version of a thrust ball bearing.

Thanks for all the information. Kurt and Patrick offered up their measurements on the KH spring and they seem to be consistent with the length that I got on my KH spring. In all three cases the springs measured about 3/32" or .100 +/- longer then what the shop dope bulletin spec is. I can't help but wonder why? Both the 1955 and 1958 Shop Dope Bulletins use the same specs. I would still like to see if someone could measure a K 18201-52 spring just to see if the shop dope specs are consistently off across the board.

Does anyone have any idea what 1932 model the 18200-32 or the 18201-32 springs came from?

Thanks,

Stan

201 is for 45ci R (W predecessor) so 200 can only be for 64ci V models???

These were the only twin engines SV at Harley in 1932.

There was a B 350 and a C 500 SV singles as well but in very limited numbers and mostly for export.

for what it's worth, I just went out an opened up a NOS -41 valve spring and measured it. Book says 2 19/32" (2.594"), actual measurement is 2.720"

Thanks Mutt for measuring your 41 spring. The pattern seems to be that for some reason the valve spring specs in the shop dope bulletin seem to be 1/16" to 3/32" shorter then what they actually are. Odd.
Now that I have a better understanding on valve spring set up I'm going to start a KK thread sometime soon. I'm trying to identify all the pieces that make up the "Special Roller Tappet Kit 18489-53R" that makes a KK a KK. I hope I can get your and Patrick's input and any other KK enthusiasts that have KK specific knowledge.

The actual length matters little if close. It's the installed heighth and pressure installed and open that matter most.
