This damned rear wheel lacing has me so pissed off. I am at a complete loss. I received the 7.5" laces from Buchanan's and the wheel laced up great. However, the brake side hub spokes are only crossing two spokes, Buchanans said it must cross three. But if I cross three, I need longer spokes. So I went back to the 8" spokes originally received and they are too long on every fourth nipple hole again(see previous messages). So, for about the sixth time I spoke the wheel again with the 7.5" spokes and they seem to fit perfect crossing 2 spokes. Meanwhile the non-brake side 8.5" spokes cross three spokes either way.

I have about 9-10 hours into one damn wheel without a solid answer on what is correct. Can ANYONE please send me a pic of a functioning, correct rear wheel? I would greatly appreciate it.

On the rear wheel, looking from the non-brake (small flange) side: the inner spokes on the non-brake side go clockwise, while the inner spokes on the brake side go counter-clockwise.

Apparently, this changed in 1955 when they switched to the BigTwin-style rear hub. So the 1959-1969 Service Manual can not be followed for 52-54 rear.

The front hub does the same thing through 1963 - inner spokes on the non-brake side go clockwise, while the inner spokes on the brake side go counter-clockwise. It looks like your front wheel is done correctly.

Actually, Upon looking at this pic again...it appears the two spoke crossover is correct. Agreed? If so, I thought Buchanan's was the EXPERT in all things about these wheels?! They have had me chasing the wrong spokes, the wrong lacing...ridiculous.

I found this pic on the web...it looks like the 2 spoke crossing on the brake side is correct since that is a 19" rim and the same hub as mine.

Hey mayday 53 I have a 19 on the rear of my 52k . I have a few spokes left over they are 71/2 and 81/2 .looking at my wheel l would say that they cross over two spokes on the hub side . The picture you posted looks right to me.

Thank you sir. I sent a full explanation and pics to Buchanan's, hopefully they will update their recommendations for similar customers.

The stainless spokes will last forever, but if you scuff them with steel wool 0000, they will look more like the cadmium plated stock units
