55 K fork tube lengths

Postby Mike » Sat Jan 07, 2017 3:38 pm

Can somebody tell me the correct length for the fork tubes on 55 model. I have 2 sets... one set measures 23 3/16" and the other 21 7/8". I am under the impression that the short length is correct but, who knows. Maybe neither are correct.
Thank you,
Mike

Hi Mike. In 55 the neck changed a little and the fork tubes were shortened 1" over previous 52-54 length. I noted that in the 55 "History". The newer short tube became the standard. The old 52 long tube became an off road option for 1" more road clearance on 57 and up XLs. Erik K

The best tubes are made here in USA at Frank's Maintenance & Engineering 847-475-1003 We lost Frank but his family carries on the business. Made from center cut tubing they are the best. Also known as Franks Forks or Forking by Frank just Google.

I spoke with Bill at Frank's Forks today and he's gonna built me a set. His book shows fork tube length for narrow glide (his words) for 70's and back as 20 3/8". Can anybody on the forum confirm this measurement for a 55 KH before I commission the work?
Thanks,
Mike

Thank you, Jerry - that pretty much squares with his book length @ 22 3/8 - it was the "narrow glide" term that had me concerned.

The narrow glide usually refers to the FX big twin that used the smaller XL fork. It should be 33.3 " tube about 21" or less. Did you mean the 20 3/8" in the last note? That is the shortest I know of and that is what the 55 took. The 22 7/8" (or 23") is what 57 and up Sportsters use according to charts I've seen. Erik K

Does Franks make the forks in raw/parkerized finish, or are they chromed?

I believe both ways. I have a set right here and the chrome is perfect. No high spots etc...
