Hi Dave. I'll work on that if you can tell me if you have original KH heads with the outside fin polished or not. :D haha I know they changed from the oil mesh to cellulose filter for 1956 and later and went with the center support screw instead of J- Hooks. So oiling the filter advice I would think would be over by 56. Can't remember. I have a few I'll pull up for a look. I would guess the service filter tag would be the same 52-55. I don't know at this time. Could be 14 different versions :?: ....Jerry help!!!!

I looked in the technical section on carbs and air cleaners. One 52-55 type or style is shown with maintenance information stamped into the cover. No tag. Is this a sure thing? Or were some made with tag attached for Ks? I know I have many of those with tag, J-hook style. If not correct for K than they must be big twin or other...any ideas on this would be great.

OK a check in the 52-56 H-D -56 Spare Parts Book shows the common J Hook cover with maintenance tag from 1941 being used on 52-55 Ks. H-D # 29030-41 Cover only. So maybe the stamped in one, in tech section, is aftermarket? Or simpler update version of the -41? Erik K

Thanks Erik- Yes, polished heads. Parts book shows J-hook through 55 which is what I have.
The Mike Quinn KHK and others in the gallery along with the museum bike all appear to have the zink with black background but I can't read them.
I would assume it's "Once a day under very dusty---", same as big twins.
According to Palmer big twins changed to screw mount in late 55 with framed instructions. He shows "wash mesh in gasoline--" for late 55 switching to "change cartridge--" in 56 so the late 55 would have to be impossible to find anyway.

The short answer to your question is: Is your bike early or late? Palmer gives no indication of what this means.

Palmer gives a thorough discussion of air cleaners. We assume the same ones were used on K/XL as on Big Twin. Here's a recap:

1952-1954 - J-slot, chrome-plated steel, riveted instruction tag "Once a day"
Early 1955 - J-slot, Stainless steel, riveted instruction tag "Once a day"
Late 1955 - J-slot, Stainless steel, instructions stamped with frame around, "Wash mesh", NO circle-R!
1956-1959 - Center hole w/Bar-and-Shield, Stainless steel, instructions stamped with frame around, "Change cartridge" [error fixed now ]
1960-1965 - Center hole w/Bar-and-Shield, Stainless steel, instructions stamped w/o frame, "Service air cleaner"

Later-production as spare parts - the 1941-1955 style J-slot with stamped instructions and a circle-R (registered trademark) stamped at the bottom left of the Bar-and-Shield logo (next to the "C" in Cycles).

Eagle Iron repro - instruction sticker, circle-R moved to bottom right

Aftermarket - varies. Originals have a steep-sided ramp that will hold the filter in place. Aftermarkets usually have a weak ramp that will not hold the filter in place.

I'm going to start an Air Cleaner technical article with this information, and the full wording of the instructions.

Nice info! :D Probably safe to assume rumors of rare un stamped (actually Knucklehead) covers are just cheap repops? Thank you Dave and Jerry!

Might we be missing one air cleaner in the above list? I have no knowledge of this other than being informed by others, but I've come to believe that the '56 K models were fit with a center mount cleaner with the instructions in a window pane. I defer to others to set me straight.
