Still Sorting 56K Basket

Postby wz507 » Thu Mar 02, 2017 3:21 pm

Back to sorting the 56K basket case. The subjects today are rear shock absorber mounting studs and kickstands. As usual I have too many of each and am trying to determine which ones are right or wrong. Looking at the parts book I see there are only a top and bottom stud, and I can cipher out from the images that the long variant goes on top, but puzzled by the thin and thick hex sections of these long studs, and which one of the two is correct for a K.

With respect to kick stands, the parts book shows a part# for 1952-53 and another for 1954-59, but have no idea how they differ. The length and foot shape of both of my stands are the same so I am showing only the head of the stand in the picture, in hopes this will reveal which stand I have.

Please take a peak at the images below and let me know what you think I have. Thank you.

Just want to mention they are stouter than early pre 56K ones. The -56 studs were used into the Sportster line for years...

My 52 stand looks like Jerry's. Ill send examples of early and -56 and up studs. The -56 ones have a shoulder built in to grab the frame hole more positively. They are different top & bottom. I think this is a top. A little longer to fit frame hole.

afaik this is the 52-53 stand.
50062-52
Image
it uses the 50090-52 pin.
all later stands use the -53 pin

these are the all the later stands up to 77.

the breakdown left to right:
far left
the 54-71 stand.
it came in two leg lengths
one for "low road clearance" 50062-52a
and one for high 50062-59
both of these stands were oe til till 70.
in 71 the short stand was no longer fitted to new bikes, as there were no more lrc bike being made.

foe 72-L73 the second stand was used.
its beefier than the previous, same part# though.
the 900 and e1000 stands side by side.

top side measurement 900 stand.

top side early 1000 stand

during the L73 model run the 3rd stand was introduced.
note it has a beefier top side yet.
it got a new pn 50063-59.
used till L74 or E75

all stands to til point were tacked and sweat brazed.
tha last stand 75-78/79was same as the its predecessor except it was welded construction.

I think you need the "two bend" low road clearance stand. With the change to the -56 frame , and the 21 7/8 shorter fork tubes, the bike would stand too upright on the "one bend" stand. When I got my current 57 , it had among other mods, extended forks. After installing the right length stuff, the bike wanted to " fall right " when kicking. I found a "two bend " stand , problem solved .

Thanks YD - I concur, the two-bend stand is the one. A friend showed me an NOS 50062-52A stand just like yours yesterday. He graciously offered to lend it to me so when I bend mine the angle and placement thereof are correct.
