1953 Crank sprocket... Compensator Alternative?

Postby sgtoepfer » Thu Mar 09, 2017 12:42 pm

Anyone have an alternative sprocket for the compensator on the 52-53 K's? I'd love to get rid of the giant aluminum primary cover on my 1953 K flat track racer, but the tin one won't work with the compensator. Plus, if I have to remove the clutch I need three sets of hands to break the compensator nut free.

Any suggestions would be sincerely appreciated.

Here's a peek at the bike if anyone is interested.

I would do a trade. The compensator set up probably saved a lot of case breaking but sure feels weird! Like a rubber band drive... :D Erik K

Looking good.

Add ~15 T on the rear sprocket.

Later, you can tell me what you feel. ( You might be surprised. )

the aluminum primary cover .can .steal the bite from the rear wheel too if you change the motor sprocket. you may need to change the trans or rearwheel sprocket

Yes, I have plenty of transmission and rear wheel sprockets depending on the gearing I want for a specific track. My concern is trying to get rid of the compensator. Does anybody know the part number I can find to change it to a direct drive sprocket?

Patrick,

It is my understanding that anything later than 53 wouldn't fit the smaller crankshaft of the early (52/53) K's, hence my question. My parts book only has the compensator version. I'll look up 40285-52 and see what is possible, thank you!

If you believe the NOS parts site, that -52 part number is for a compensator.

I have my doubts as well, but it is shown with the splines in the parts book...
