Whew...what a journey. last count I laced my rear wheel 7 times only to finish it up back at the original lacing. I found an original wheel laced (see post regarding 53K sold at Mecum) and it had the same wheel laced "cross 3" on non-sprocket side and "cross 2" on the sprocket side....just as I originally thought and laced it. So, I was told it was not uncommon for the spoke threads to extend beyond the nipple and I should just grind and smooth them off...that is my current path. I am also trying to buy the "brand new" Avon tires on the 53K sold at Mecum since he is taking them off to put more "modern" tires on it. If he decides to keep them, I plan to put Heidenau K34 tires on it.

Thanks for everyone's help, non-help, and inputs helping me grow from this "wonderful" lacing lesson!

Got a rim question. My parts books aren't new enough. I have a 43004-60A, 40 spoke, 18" rim. Can someone tell me what years it fits? Thanks. Jim

The part number may not be the same as that stamped on the rim. Page 2C-12 of the 59-69 Sportster service manual indicates that the steel rear wheel rim is stamped 43004-60. The part number for this rim is 43005-35. Early Sportster steel rims were manufactured by Kelsey Hayes Wheel (KHW). The later ones by French and Hecht (F&H), stamped on the rim with a circle around it. The F&H rims generally had an oblong tube valve hole while the Kelsey Hayes a round one. The "A" designation may mean there is some difference from the 43004-60.

My rim was in a pile of K and Sportster parts I got several years ago. It does have the oblong stem hole and I can barely make out the F&H stamping. Thanks for that info. I didn't know HD got rims from anyone but Kelsey Hayes. Still curious about the difference that gives it the "A" designation in the part number. Thanks again.

Where's the " A " ?

Does the rim have holes drilled for security screws ? If yes, how many per side ?

Just a standard looking rim. No screw holes. Nipple holes all measure approx. 0029". Pict of part number attached.

I expected your * A * rim to have the screw holes for 1445W ( self-tapping # 10 x 3/4 " long ).

Parts book shows those screws ( 8 ) were used during '67 - '69 .
