Never heard one doing that but heard of a lot of bearing housing failures causing destruction.

Ah, yeah that would be bad. I hadn't heard of that in particular. Thank you Mike.

So if it is common for the gear to be broken, missing, not working, or folks remove them to prevent other damages, does that mean most folks drive without a working speedometer?

I ask because my project bike did not have a speedometer, one of my yet-needed finds, and I have not looked closely at the drive yet.

the speedometer drive problem is so common that Trock made a piece that could be welded in to the damaged part of the right case
the factory offered a rearwheel speedo drive they moved the speedo drive to the front wheel in the '70s
it's a common problem the company knew it AMF fixed it

I was thinking about this today. When I got the bike, barn find, it had a cracked case and a crack in the trap door...I wonder if these all could be related...hmmmm.

This '52 or '53 right case is on ebay right now. I'ts a good example of what a speedometer drive blowout can look like.

I have quite a few high mileage cases that are perfect there. My OP 52 has 16,000 miles and I know the aircraft mechanic used to ride it hard. I still think if everything is in spec it is the Countershaft right bearing that fails first or bearing boss breaks off because it is only supported on one end that causes the stacking and breaking of cases due to gear bind. I think Mr Speedo Drive is an innocent bystander that gets blamed because it was there. Just my idea after seeing and repairing cases. I would run one with a stock bike , with correctly built trans. No extra play. Anywhere
