9989 Spark control coil clamp

Postby hennesse » Fri Jul 06, 2018 10:48 am

I'm looking for a 9989 Spark control coil clamp to buy or borrow, or failing that, photos/dimensions for making one (Old Dude doesn't have them). My bike had a magneto when I got it, with an aftermarket advance/retard handle attached - so no adv/retard cable, so no clamp.

Parts Catalogs - I could not find this in the 53-56 Spare Parts Catalogs. I did find it in the 1957 and 1959 catalogs - only in the text, not in the illustration. Apparently when they updated the Handlebars and Controls section with the new Sportster 56628-57 Timer Cable Bracket, they realized they had left the K-model clamp out. Interestingly, they list the clamp as fitting 54 to 56 Model KH. I suspect this is also used on 52-53 K.

Check a local lawnmower shop. I’ve found them there over the years. Usually indiscernible from OEM.

I have thought of using a 9957 clamp which is used to hold the same diam. control coil for the throttle on a Sportster. It would need to be drilled out to 3/8" towards the pinch end of the clamp (not enough metal towards the open end).

Try a 9957 or 9965 and enlarge the hole to fit. You can turn a 9965 into a 9957 by doing that.

That's for the larger diam. coil on 45 c.i. It has the 3/8" hole but will need a sleeve for it to hold the smaller diam. coil.

Jack Raino e-mailed me this - from his 1955 KHK basket case. I chopped up his ruler and added the blue lines.

Mutt - the Colony 9007-2 is a HD# 9967 Might be close enough though.

How about the speedometer cable clamp that goes on the right front frame downtube ?? I can't find that in the parts books either.

Yes, I think that's a 9982 Coil clip, mentioned in the Wiring section of the Parts Catalog.

But here is the clamp of which I am speaking:

This is on Jim Garrett's 1954 KH. It can also be seen on the 1954 Museum KH, Hewson's 1953 K, Diener's 53 KK, Meinke's 56 KHK. I think you can just see the end of it poking out on Reynolds' XLA. You have to take a photo at an odd angle, so most of the photos in the Gallery don't show it.

I suspect this was used from 1952 to 1958 - in 1959, they drilled and tapped a hole in the right side of the frame neck for a 9982-like clamp

I don't think it's the 9977 shown under Wiring. And where the heck does that go?
