Linkert Carburetor Technical Question

Postby Mayday53 » Wed Feb 04, 2015 1:22 pm

I removed my Linkert Carburetor to rebuild it. It is a Model M. It also has the number 2-416 on it; are those part numbers or is it part of the model number? Also, any tips for the rebuild would be appreciated.

Thanks!

It should have M53 or M53-A1. M53 1952, 53. M53-A1 is for 1954 and up 54" motors. Don't know those numbers. If it has the Bombsite Venturi it is correct. If it us open inside it is for the bigger engines. If you have no Carburetor Man around there I do carbutetor restorations for a living. Needs to be cleaned but not over cleaned. Shafts bushed and fitted. New float, needle, seat etc and set up. If interested call me Monday at 907-456-1561-North Star Motors shop. Leave a contact message. If I don't pick up it is probably because I'm making too much noise to hear the phone. I'm in Fairbanks, Alaska so 4 hours behind east coast time. Erik

Dave, I recently bought a copy of "The Linkert Book". If you,or anyone in the group would like to make a copy of it,let me know, either here or at [email protected].
I'll be more then happy to send it out to you,all I ask is that I get it back in the same shape I sent it. It's brand new and stapled together,so if you use it,just re-staple or you can punch holes and use the brass folding pins. Feel free to ask,and good luck to everyone on their bikes and builds this winter. Mike

Mine does not have any ID except saying MODEL M then the number 2-416, which I presume is a part or casting number. How do I verify which Model M it is, by visual only?

Mayday,

The model number is on the top of the carburator, next to the air cleaner. M53, M53A, M53A1 Go over to the Technical section of this website, click Carbs, click the first link "Linkert DC Carbs for XL Models R13.pdf" - you can see examples of the model number on page 6.

Data point: My M53A1 says L&L Manufacturing on one side, on the other, it says "1-1/2 Mod M", and under that "2-418". I have no idea what the 2-418 means.

Your 1956 motor should have a M53-A1. Your original 1953 motor would have had a M53 (or possibly a M53A, but they're unusual).

I bought a carb overhaul kit for the Linkert. However it came with a brass float versus the old style cork rubber one. Will the brass float work as well as the cork?

Hi, the brass float is fine. Most important is setting level correctly. I hear that ethanol gas is hard on them? Don't have that here do no experience with that. The Nitrophyl style works well also. I have always run the brass ones with no problem. Make sure your shaft bushings are tight or bush and fit them back to zero as any air leaks will upset the balance of air fuel ratios. Thank they don't run well.

Well, I searched and searched for the other model number info and could not find it. Here are some pictures of the carb, if anyone can ID the actual model further than a model M I sure would appreciate it.
