Generator gear excess clearance

Postby K Daddy » Fri Dec 21, 2018 3:18 pm

The gear that drives the generator on my '52 K has excess clearance. The gear actually wobbles on the shaft.
Maybe someone can recommend a fix. Do you know of a shop that can clean up the shaft and put an oversized bushing in the bore of the gear?
It looks like the shaft is threaded into the base, but I'm not sure.

If there is anything left of the bushing then I would guess that your shaft may be OK. If the bushing has worn through and there has been steel on steel contact then they both are probably bad. The bushing has a 25785-30 part number. I wouldn't think the bushing would be too hard to find since it's an old part number and was used on many applications. If your not using them yet the parts books in the Technical section are very useful. The shaft is screwed into the case with 25794-30 screw.I would just replace the bushing first and see what you get.

I’d look over the shaft carefully and determine if there is a groove worn in it or excess wear on one side and not the other. If there is you'll have to replace it since you can't fit a new properly sized bushed gear on a shaft that varies in diameter or is out of round.

Eastern offers the bushing, shaft and screw you may need. See page 63 in the linked catalog for an image of the parts, identify the required part numbers and find them individually or in kit form on page 65. You'll likely need someone to hone the bushing to size after installation in the gear.
