Fairbanks Morse front mount magnetos

What model designation (FM) were the front mount Fairbanks Morse magnetos that were used on the KRs/XRs?

I stumbled onto FM magneto listings on EBay and saw a bunch of magnetos for Cat,Deere,Allis,Wisconsin, etc and saw one twin cylinder one (X1-2B7) that LOOKED like the body and mounting flange could work-maybe.

Just wondering.

You may find a body to work but remember that the cam on the rotor is specific to Harley Davidson's 45 degree firing order so you need to get that rotor. You can buy rare earth rotor for HD from Fairbanks Morse yet.

I know. I wasn't planning on doing it, just wondering if HD got the body off the shelf from FM.

Joe,

The body is not off the shelf.

The body is cast with a specific front nose with 2 offset and oblong ears to fix to H-D alloy adaptor that itself fixes on the crankcase.

And in case you're wondering why it needs an adaptor between magneto and crankcase, the KR case was designed for a specific Wico magneto which was used 52 till 54, expensive. They then switched to the cheaper/smaller Fairbanks, hence the adaptor...

The rotor shaft, the gear -and the mouse ; O )- are also special

Fairbanks Morse ref is XZ2B.xx, H-D ref is 2950356R or RB, both engraved on the Fairbanks Morse ident plate riveted on the body.

This K model site is the most detailed for HD magnetos . I did a net search and everything leads to Hunt or Morris minus any oem part numbers .

the serial plate there XZ2B63 , XZ = type , 2 = no of cylinders , B = mounting , 63 = HD mo co , HD p/n 29503-56R

info surrounding K model is the best historic info on the net

^ this page gives an idea how enormous the magneto once was , EVERYTHING had a magneto .
