Since H-D race dept also sold complete wheels, it goes to say that the list above might not be all of it.
Rims with other part numbers might have been used to assemble wheels in the factory, see DD's photo of -53R rim above that's not listed in the books.

Bye for now,

Patrick, just out of interest did HD ever use 21inch front wheels in K series machines for short track or 1/2 mile purposes? I reakon I might have seen a pic somewhere around the traps. Or maybe that could have been the individual riders choice? Cheers Hayley.

Joe Leonard told me that he used a 21" front on certain tracks or for certain track conditions for better traction.

Yes, plenty of photos up to 1960 showing 21" wheels on KR flat trackers...

Not listed in the parts books, so all probably locally made here and there...

Sometimes, race decisions are also driven by fashion...

One rider tries this or that, managed a top 3 finish, heh presto, next weekend, a few more guys show up with the same trick!!!

Yes that's for sure! Monkey see monkey do! :D I had great success winning 1994, 95 & 96 Alaska B-Stock Championships with a 78 TransAm I built. Racing tires, shocks and springs were allowed but I never needed them as the car handled so well with adjustments. I ran Cooper Cobras siped to the carcass. After dominating early on in 93 part year and winning in 94 scads of racers statewide were swapping race tires for Cooper Cobras! My Cooper sponsor said they were selling them like hotcakes. They should have taken a closer look at my reaction time and throttle position! ;) Those were fun times, usually just my wife and I and 1 or 2 helpers. Same thing happened when I was a Sportsman rookie in 87. Won 30 races that summer on radial tires...the "old" folks thought that was the reason and parked their race tires for radials! I drove cars with correct racing tires shocks and springs and they are so much better handling and easier to drive. Erik K

Hi Folks:
Jerry R. was kind enough to get me started & now I think I can figure out this social media thing I've been actively avoiding. Actually there were three things about this assembly that caught my attention.
1st was the part number. I figured it was racing but I did not have any parts books that would help me identify that rim. Thank you for the part numbers in one of the previous posts but this part number doesn't show up so there were probably several different variations that H-D experimented with. We have two of these rims with this part number and they are not identical. One has some pronounced/sharp serrations on the inside of the rim to grab the side of the tire bead, the other does not have the serrations.
2nd is the hub. It is obviously the earliest if not a prototype of the 41017-55 hub based on the construction. I was thinking it is either a prototype pre-'55 for racing or the earliest example of the 41017-55 hub. Note the construction of the flanges and the almost after thought of the centering collar for the brake drum. The brake side flange has a center hole sized just large enough to fit over the spindle and then it is hand welded from the inside to the spindle. Then they slipped a ring (separate piece) over the spindle and it looks like it was brazed to the spindle. All of the production hubs I have found over the years have the ring formed/swagged as part of the flange. Fixation to the spindle varies over time. Note the zerk has the ball located at the end and is visible. I believe this change happened in about '55. Note that this is 60 years ago so the zerk may have been changed or H-D started using this style zerk earlier than '55.
3rd is the Harley spokes and nipples set up for a 19" rim and the '55 hub. The threads are the same as used on the 18" and 16" spokes from the '30s & '40s through to the '70s.

Hi,

I won't talk about KR hubs, they are a race item since they're not used on the road K or KH.
It is also worth noting that if a part is not listed in the race part books, HD and the reader know that's because it's a std road going part to be found in the K or KH parts catalogues.

Wheels and hubs, 1954 and 1959 race catalogues:

No front or rear hubs are listed for the KRTT, it's cause they are the same as the street K.
This is confirmed by the listing of 18" rear wheel 40989-53 and 19" front wheel 43506-52 in the "Conversion Kit to convert a KR into a KRTT"

Personal note, don't take offence, this is only my opinion!!!

If what you have in your hand looks like a std part that has been modified or reinforced, look at the amount of work and the "beauty" of it:
If it took more than an hour to make, it is NOT a factory or prototype part. It is personal improvement.
If it looks that the mod has not been though through in the first place via a drawing and doesn't look like a properly arranged assembly ( the right way for a factory to do mods and protos) it is hand made on the go by the owner.

Bye for now
