Certainly makes one wonder how the right case and cam chest could possibly be modified to go from the unusual geometry of the K Model valve train and tappet blocks, that mount with 2 fasteners each, to the XL tappet blocks that are totally different geometry and mount with a single fastener? Is the right case XL and the left case K Model? Matching XL belly numbers say no.

Also not clear how you use K cases and go from the 2.75" K Model bore to the 3.0" XL bore, which requires shifting the crankshaft to the left, which in turn necessitates shifting the primary drive left. God only knows what's in those cases, and even he might not know. Lot more questions here than answers. If it looks like a Sportster and smells like a Sportster it likely is a Sportster. Would love to see an image of that left case primary drive with no trapdoor in it.

I'm skeptical , call me a nonbeliever. remember that K models have crooked cams and lifters (right case) the left case appears to be a '57 sportster

If it's a Sportster frame and the belly numbers say Sportster the chance that it is a K is pretty slim. Date code on the frame would tell you everything.
OK enough of the guessing game everybody I contacted the seller about the trap door and he said there isn't one so what does that tell you ? 53 K Easily done deal.[/quotes]

Oh, he said so...well there it is, because we all know everyone knows that nobody misrepresent anything being sold on eBay. That is why I now I need to see it to believe it if it is at all questionable…Or of the character of the individual is not known. I trust guys like Erik and Hennessy because I know they have their fecal matter in one sock shit on these old bikes... they do it out of love for the bike not load for your buck!

Of course I don’t actually know, but but my eyes don’t deceive me in the saying it’s a piecemeal bike, definitely not a 53K. It may be a fun rider, but not a 53K by any stretch. That said, I am also of the faction that says, so what? If I get it (legally!) at the right price and can have fun....gitrdun!

Peace out....safe riding ya’ll!

I believe Terry is correct about the trap door battery tray. Also you can see the trap door bump in one of the pics. The frame is likely an early K frame. That's a 52 to 55 crash bar which I don't believe would fit on a Sportster frame. It looks like it has a frame neck wire clip which also I don't believe would fit a Sportster frame. Looks like early 5/16" coil studs. The front motor mount has the hole in it for the Sportster crash bar which didn't come until 1956. Sure looks like a Sportster motor in a K frame with a lot of mixed pieces parts.

If anyone is interested, I am selling my 52K Flat tracker. Yes, they are replacement cases (1955) with a trap door with the 1953 VIN stamped in my the Harley Dealer (Ransom's - Riverside CT) back in the late 50's when she blew up. The cases are mismatched but both from 1955. It's been together since I purchased in 1972 (yes 1972), runs great, everything works and it has been converted over to 12 volt (although the original 6v genny and regulator do come with the bike). I have the original very ugly Bates white leather seat that was on her when I got her from the original owner. F-M Magneto, correct flat tracker oil tank, was originally J-D Green. In NC now so don't let the CT area code bother you (203) 223-3297 asking 15K OBO I took her out for a spin the other day but with a ruptured disc in my back, she unfortunately has to go.

The headlight is a 1952-1953 with the indicator lights near the rim. The front brake backing plate has the funny "cut" in it (top rear) that is 1952-1953. The rear wheel has the early hub used in 1952-1954. The fork top cover has the limiting detents for the flippers, which were 1952 to ~1954.

Here's an interesting thing I never noticed before. http://www.harleykmodel.com/gallery/195 ... index.html Click on "In The Alley", then click "Supersize", then drag down to the front wheel. You'll see the 1952-1953 cut in the backing plate. Now look closely at the brake operating lever - it's in two places at once! I must have squeezed the brake when I moved the bike, and it stuck. Just as I snapped the photo, it unstuck itself - giving us this "double exposure effect". At least that's my explanation of this phenomenon.
