Choke lever finish - 1957 Sportster

Postby GaryM2 » Mon Dec 23, 2019 4:26 pm

Can anyone verify the correct finish of the choke lever bracket assembly for a 1957 Sportster please? This would be the later bracket for 1957 that was moved in front of the horn pack. Part # 27236-57. It looks like it is either cad plated or painted silver.

I am pretty confident that it was cadmium plated, but would also welcome another opinion to agree/disagree.

The industry was changing over from zinc to cadmium in the late 1950s as the standard bright coating. I think you’re pretty safe either was, but I’d go with zinc.

Definitely not zinc in 1957. I'm not aware of Harley using zinc on any parts until the 1970s.

Ok - my mistake , but there was some other bright finis that predated cadmium.

Maybe you're thinking of nickel plating? I'm not aware of any Sportster parts that were nickel plated.

Yes, I probably was thinking of semi- bright nickel. I remember seeing some NOS HD pieces from the 40s that had were bright finish. Could have been semi- bright nickel.
Did HD ever galvanize any parts?

Hi All, following is a page from the OSKRG Bulletin on carbs and a picture of a version #3 57 XL NOS choke lever showing finish.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

Jerry, thanks for posting the NOS picture. The lever threaded pin looks dark inside the nut in the picture. Is this threaded pin parkerized or cad plated?
