Sportster Boattail Fender

Postby reicherp » Tue Feb 16, 2021 2:13 pm

Hi, there ! I'm looking meanwhile hopelessly for the mounting instructions of the sportster boattail fender. This must be a part of the boattail section if you've bought it as accessory. Does anybody call this sheet his own !? Please let me know. Thanks, Peter

Look up page 66 in the 1961-76 HD parts manual. I think inner guard is an odd bod too. Maybe there is someone out there that owns one, they could take some pics. I don't think there are 'mounting instructions' per say. There is nothing in the service manual. Cheers Hayley.

Hi Hayley, thanks for your fast response! I'm looking especially for the info how to chop or how to prepare the inner fender before mounting the fiber section. Best regards, Peter

Pete - I believe the standard inner fenders are altered or stamped differently to suit the fibreglass option. Not just a chopped standard rear fender. Forward from say 12 o'clock I believe it's pretty much a standard rear sportster fender for 70 and 71 (in relation to the inner fender we're talking about), but post 12 o'clock I believe it's different or shortened for the application from the factory for a boat tail. Best would be to have a look at an actual example. I have a good friend with a bone stock 71 boatie superglide but that's a way different story. I have a stock (rough) shitty green glass tail for a sportster. It's significantly different to the FX tail so I can't draw any comparrison for mounting applications. Cheers Hayley.

Hi Hayley, I know what you mean I have several fiber tails.(Sportster and Superglide) Also an inner fender FX. That shows the 'dented' section for the tailight. Perhaps there's somebody out there with a content list of the accessory box you've got in the '70s from your harley dealer or photos of that special fender. Thanks, Peter

So what is the difference between Sportster and Superglide tails? Can you take some "comparative anatomy" photos?
