Hi, Back from a few days break...

1) There a few examples of KHK cases stamped with the C so that's not guys 1000 miles apart stamping the same thing at the same place on their cases ; - )

2) It it stood for close ratio set C, we could reasonably also expect the other 11 other prefered ratios for XLR and KR to appear sometimes??? (there's more, 48 combinations in all from the 20 factory gears...) the 12 are: KR, CLOSE, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, M and N... A few others were also named for the XRs in the 70s...

I still think the C to stand for close ratio box, but that's just my instinct...

The 55 KHK on Ebay right now has a set of "D" cases. Check it out.

Starting in I believe 57 based on the information being in the 57 Riders Handbook, K replacement cases were equipped with the dowels for the trap door instead of the cones. These replacement cases were stamped with a "D" and had blank VIN bosses for the dealership to re-stamp. These cases all should have belly numbers that are two or three digits. They will not have the 552- etc. like the 52 through 56 manufactured K cases have. One of the mysteries to me is why would they stamp some belly numbered 757-XXXX cases with the "D"? Shown below are the set of 57 cases I have with the "D". I think there was a thread on this a couple years ago. The questions I posed in addition to what did the "C" stamp indicate (I believe it refers to the gear ratios) was what did the "S" stamp indicate? K model dealer cases and the "S" stamped case photos to follow.

Something else that I find interesting is the above dealer K case with a 1961 casting date does not have the D stamp.

Interesting cases your honor! Thinking backwards like I seem to do first. The 1st set I imagine was a good extra set someone, perhaps a dealer, had with matching numbers, etc. From wreck, or salvage..Than a customer blew his cases out completely. Hmm well how about this set. Old # gone, ready for new number, put a D on there to make it better....than the job falls through so its put on the back shelf. Possible???

The last set with no numbers or D. Well I believe they normally stamp the Vin on the replacement case and the D at the same time. The low replacement case belly numbers must be stamped as they left the line to go to inventory. Have a few like 81, etc. Erik K.. :?: taking some guesses. #666 ha
