Help - Senior Moment

Postby hennesse » Fri Oct 09, 2015 12:03 pm

Help - I'm having a senior moment.

Down at the very bottom of the Technical:Numbers page is a paragraph about the "D" stamping in some engine cases. The "D" refers to the type of dowel pins in the case for the trapdoor.

I copied this information from a H-D document, but I can't seem to find that document. I suspect it was a "Shop Dope" that someone sent me, but I can't remember. Does anyone know what document this is?

I'm a CRS Syndrome Survivor. Except that I can't remember what CRS stands for!

Hi Dave
Youll find that info in the 57 riders handbook. Since you brought up the topic of letters stamped in the case by the VIN I have a question. I have been trying for the longest time to figure out what the letters C and S indicate on the case by VIN. I am out of town until Sunday night but when I get home I will post the handbook paragragh about the letter D and images of cases with the letters C and S.
Have a great day everybody.

Jerry,
Found it in the Service Manual, not the Rider's Handbook. French Owl says he has a left case with the letter C, but he doesn't know what it means.
Dave

AND - I posted the snippet from the Service Manual on the Technical:Numbers page.

Hi Jerry,

My 54 KHK is also stamped "C" in front of the serial...

Since close ratio gear box were available, It could mean fitted with "C" close ratio?????????

My KHK has a close ratio box, but believe it or not, I've never checked the teeth it in the 30 years I've had it... I just know it's there cause thegear spacing are way unlike those on a std Sportster...

Also it's the 1st time I ever saw an "S" on a Sportster case... No idea either...

And I don't quite understand one of your photos of a Sportster case stamped D... It's normal to have straight dowels on a Sportster!!!!!

Hi Patrick,
I agree it makes no sense that a 57XL case would need to be stamped with a "D" to indicate it was fitted with the dowels. Perhaps it means that it was a dealer replacement case? Let me ramble on over the course of probably two or three postings, I'll need that many to post the pictures needed to run some ideas by you. The cases that I have with the "D" stamped by the VIN I believe to be dealer replacement cases. The reason for this is the VIN is unstamped and the belly numbers are very high. I have a theory that at the end of each model year (or at least at the end of the 57 run) Harley made extra cases for dealer replacements. You'll notice the high 757-Belly Numbers on my unstamped cases with the "D". I think the cases might have been used by a racer since it has roller bearings for the cams. All the K model replacement cases I have seen made after 56 with the trap door and the dowels have been marked with a "D" and have had simple belly numbers like"128" and a casting code date on the inside of the left crankcase like "3-62". So what would the "D" mean on a replacement K case made after 56? It would have to be a dealer case so is that what the D is for? It would have to be fitted for the dowels, is that what the D is for? Or in fact does the D mean both of these things for the K, that is a dealer case made after 56 and it has the dowels. The D then on 57 and later cases would simply imply dealer since they already would be fitted for the dowels.

I will post the additional pictures of the K cases in the next post. I also have a picture of some hand written notes in a 57 handbook that I wonder if they support your theory about the letter "C" on the cases?

I have an NOS set of dealer K cases with a virgin VIN boss marked similar to these with a 63 date casting on the inside.
So what do you think?
Have a great day,

Does this fit with your theory for the stamped "C" on the case indicating a close gear ratio Patrick? These are from a KH Handbook.
