Identifying K model tappet guides

Postby Simon » Fri Nov 18, 2016 3:40 am

Hi everyone - is there a quick and easy way to differentiate K model tappet guides from WL or UL guides at a glance?

Yes, there is a relief (ridge) area around the outer base of the threaded tappet cylinder and a countersunk area around the inner edge of the top of the threaded cylinder. The K-model tappet guide is flat to the edge of the threaded cylinder and there is no countersunk edge at the top of the tappet cylinder.

Ok, a couple of further questions for the more enlightened:

1) Is there an easy way (from photos, etc) to distinguish front/rear/intake/exhaust guides from eachother?

2) Are the U (and indeed D/R/V) series guides the same as those from W series? (assume there may be differences for the late 30s and later, but were these differences such as threads for screw down covers, etc shared between the models?).

Sorry if the latter is off topic, however inquiring minds want to know...

Thanks!

Hi Simon, I was scrolling through some old posts and came across this one. I've been fooling around with tappets and guides lately so I thought I would try to answer your question of how to identify a tappet front and rear from photos, etc. There is no difference between intake and exhaust just front and rear. To identify front from rear in a photo you need to look for the oil passage hole or groove. When looking from the front of the guide if the groove is pointing to the left it's a front, if pointing to the right it is a rear.
