Yeah, but la MoCo didn't put 150 MPH speedos on XL 's para nada.

No, " they had to ".

Truth in advertising.

The 68 through at least 72 and maybe later Sportsters had 150 MPH speedometers. Hot Rod magazine tested a 66CH and top speed with straight pipes was 125 MPH. A bone stock magazine test 69 CH hit 116 MPH. Those were with Goodyear Grasshoppers and Sport Rib/All Traction, long before speed ratings.

Yeah, and we could also change the brakes for better ones, fit bigger forks to handle the bigger brakes, them use a more modern frame so it can cope with the bigger forks...

STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can truthfully say I used to run a very fast 66 CH with jap's K70s front and rear, I'm talking say 20 miles FLAT OUT 120+ on the motorway at the dead of nite and with no lights...

I'm still here to tell the tale...

And it did not feel scary, just in tune with the lot!!!

I know how the XL Iron runs, and can.

The NEWEST Jap K70 's are indeed thin, so why push the luck ?

The tires are NOT the same as the original construction.

Yeah, I know where I am.... but only for evidence, here's something I added to the line up :

( needs a bit of cosmetics, but damned original, unmolested, and its motor is a good one )

I'm sure a few of you know how an H2 runs & handles. While the power pales compared to modern standards, its acceleration moment is ample... and all guns are loaded .

Yes, has newer Dunlops . To ME, regardless the Speed Ratings, the front " feels " edgy. Simply don't like the profile.

I'll be mounting a pair of Contis : RB2 3.25H-19 and a K112 4.00H-18 Yep, H rated.

Another Japper I've had for years is a CB750-K1 :

Pulled the wheels, replaced F & R spokes with Buchanans' SS ( new rear rim ), trued within a few thousandths both radially & laterally, mounted Contis & balanced to fly-spec on my CEMB. The inner tubes were German Metzlers. A smoother running, and RIDING, vintage bike doesn't exist.

OY!!!!!!!!!!!

I never said to fit a K70 on a Nipponish Ninja Nagazaki Soupa Doupa Booza... (by the way, don't know where they all are, these supposed time travel bombs, I never see them on the roads except stopped at biker's cafes while their multicolored leather clad way pass sell by date toad stanced owners have a loud verbal diaorreah competition about their latest hair raising tales...In their heads more like...)

We're just talking a decent tire with a period look for a pre 69 K, KH or X harley...

Wondering how long K70 's might last on this one ?

Looks like the rear wheel has room enough for two. From what I've heard, OEM is the only way to fly.

I too love those Metzlers. Its not the speed rating I need them for, its because they are nice and sticky. I get caught in the rain every year. That and loose gravel and leaves and I never regret spending money on Metzlers. Now that I live in flatland Florida I might look at cheaper tires. I would not buy a tire based on looks, they are just too darn important to keeping the rubber side down.

Ambike, I look at that 72 Kawa and it stuns me to think how retrograde the engineering was on a 72 Sportster, drum brakes and all.
