Points Gap Difference!?!?

Postby Zaemo » Tue May 23, 2017 10:32 pm

Hello everyone. After many setbacks on the '57, I can finally take her up and down the road. I am going to start dialing in the mixture and timing and plugs.

My 57 Sportster Handbook says the points should be set a .022". The service manual says single point distributors should be .020" and auto advance dual point distributors should be .022".

Anyone have any clarity on this? Seems kind of important. :?

Thanks and hope everyone's projects are moving forward.

You don't have a thick matchbook cover? :P It's a very small number .002". Only difference I can think of is it would cause slightly less coil saturation time with more gap. I usually use .022" that way if they wear a little they are still close.

Nah, I quit smoking years ago! It's just odd that they are different specs.

It doesn't need as much dwell being that it's 12V now.

Maybe I'll try both...... or .021" 8-)

Get rid of points and put in Quick start 2000 and all problems are over. Works with 12 or 6 volt systems Great set up. Nobody will know unless you tell.

Thanks Lisa,
I've ordered one. I was going to put together my own using a Pertronix sensor I have but this looks nice and I won't have to fabricate anything.

The setup I made for my dual coil Ford Flathead is so nice. If there's gas in the carb, it fires immediately!
