I suspect there are some nit-pickers out there who are into meaningless manual labor. If that describes you, grab your calculator, and add up the numbers for a particular year, and see if you get the same total that is shown in the document. My preliminary results show that the totals for 1948, 1953, 1954, and 1955 are different that what is shown.
I OCR'd the document with the wonderful ABBYY that Sportster Paul provided (thank you Paul!), and imported into Excel. I created a calculated set of totals. For the years noted, the calculated totals are different that what's shown in the document. OCR errors, right? Wrong! I used my trusty hand calculator to add the 1948, and then the 1955 columns from the original document. In both cases, the hand calculator agreed with the Excel, which did NOT agree with the total in the document. I didn't bother with the other years. Woo-hoo.
What's really interesting to me is the big increases and decreases in neighboring states.
NV increased by 217% over the 10 years. Neighboring NM increased by 142%
MD decreased by 39% over the 10 years. VA decreased by 22% NC decreased by 48%
NY decreased by 50% Neighboring NJ stayed almost steady with a 4% decrease.
