Got it...rattle gun turned it right off...no damage to threads appear, which is good. As for removal of basket...what is the best practice for safe removal?

Well, the motor sprocket nut has enough length for you to get enough torquw on it (without ripping out the threads) to provide sufficient clamping force that no tab washer is needed. (My guess)
Pulers have opposing threads so when you start applying torque to them they tighten up and allow more torque to be applied.
New motorcycles ?

What ?

Wait ?

They're making new ones ?

OK - I'm going down to the dealer today and order a new 65 XLCH. Hi-Fi Red I think. Going to get the alloy wheels too.

OK...I got the whole thing apart, rebuilt the kicker mechanism. Now a couple more questions I would appreciate experienced guidance resolving:

1) I put the the kicker nut on just snug enough for some tension then bent the spacer tab to ensure the nut stayed in place. Sound right?

2) Is there a torque setting for the Clutch hub nut and drive chain gear on right side of case??

3) Is there a torque setting for the driveshaft nut?

4) Any guidance on the tension/slack needed on the primary drive chain? I assumed so and kept it pretty tight, less than 1/16 in "slack"

primary chain 5/8" to 7/8" (cold engine)
good call on the kicker gear nut (they strip easy)
clutch hub nut 150 ft. lbs.
motor sprocket nut 150 ft.lbs. (this nut keeps the timken bearing tight ) if you have a compensating sprocket hit the wrench with a hammer

Mike,

On the motor sprocket nut, when i put it at 150 ft lbs the compensatory spring is compressed nearly all the way. Please confirm that is expected please.

Thank you sir

50 lbs. or 150lbs. the spring would have the same free travel the important thing is to get the sprocket shaft nut tight as it holds the timken bearing tight (plus we don't want the sprocket to fall off) can you post pics?

looks o k to me if the extens ion and the nut are tight together I don't see how it could be a problem but I'm not an expert on K model stuff or compensating sprockets
aren't Kmodels side valves? second chance is about tires
