Learning and growing with my K/KHK

Postby Mayday53 » Wed May 02, 2018 1:49 am

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that helped me on this site! I entered the restoration of my 1953 K/1955 KHK restoration progress with zero, literally zero motorcycle maintenance experience. I have learned so much over the past 3 + years working on it, sharing information on this site, and developing a better sense of patience than I thought I could ever have. Now, after literally hundreds of hours of personal effort and growth my bike is coming into reality. Below are the before and current status pictures. I still have a way to go, for example this week I will be installing an actual K-Model speedo, changing out the emblems, running fuel lines, reinstalling chain, installing clutch cable, and replacing the hand grips. I am sure I will do much more as this love affair continues...and just as importantly I nowI know how to work on my motorcycle!

Picking it up in late summer of 2013:

Well, I got the correct emblems and a refurbished, correct Speedo on the bike (thanks to Erik in AK) and voila...it took first place at the first bike show I entered it. I actually thought the ox blood grips, blacked out bars, forks, and rear struts would kill the chances, but it got rave reviews from nearly everyone I talked to this weekend; the grips were pinted out as incorrect about 30 times though (I am changing them back to stock black soon). This just goes to show you how this little K/KH/KHK bike is such a crowd attractant. So many people stopped me to talk about it...despite the first guy asking me if it was a Hummer...

Sorry for the crotch grab, I am laughing because my pants split open as I crouched down...had to hold my identity in! :-)
