Hide and Go Seek

Postby hennesse » Mon May 28, 2018 3:48 pm

I'm making a list of all the CP 1038 bolts I need to find...

The 38676-52 Clutch control coil bracket mounts on the left side of the steering head. The 1300 screw (12-24x1/2 Fillister head) pinches the coil.
So where are the bolt/washer that hold the bracket to the frame? They're not in the Hand Clutch Control section. They're not in the Frame and Rear Fork section.

I can't find them - can you?

Try the safety guard section.

Amazingly bad repro CP bolts

I need a few CP 1038 bolts, and I thought I'd punch "CP 1038 bolts" into Google, and see what came up. I was surprised!

Here are some original CP 1038 bolts on my 54 KH. The CP and 1038 are pretty cleanly stamped. C and P are in a line. 1 0 3 8 are aligned radially from the center (not a very good description, but...) The top of the bolt has a distinct round flat area where the markings are, and a slope down to the wrench flats. CP and 1038 are close to the edge of the round area.

Red Raven products has a number of different sizes for sale. Their 1/4" bolts look pretty much like the originals. Their 5/16 bolts (below at left) look decently formed, but the markings are in the wrong places. eBay seller blarneyrubble offers ones (below at right) that are really rough - if the markings are so bad, I wonder just how good a bolt it is?

I haven't bought any in quite awhile, but as I remember, Old Dude's CP bolts are pretty accurate. Any one bought any recently?

Are there any other places to get good repros?

Thanks Dave. I don't have a safety guard, so I didn't think of looking there.

Anyone remember a guy I think his name is Jim Harvey? I had bought some hardware in the 90s, he re-produced 1038CP hardware very accurate and in correct finishes. I think he was in Michigan or Ohio.

The last I spoke with him, probably 15 years ago, or more, he had quit the bolt business. I think his stuff went to the Old Dude. Yes, he had nice stuff.
