Boot Guard - 65700-52(A)

Postby hennesse » Thu Jan 08, 2015 12:20 pm

I just picked up some gingerbread - a 65700-52(A) Boot Guard, NOS for $26 on eBay. The 1954 and 1956 parts books show the 65700-52, but not in the illustration. The 1957 parts book shows the -52A, but not in the illustration. The 1963 and 1965 parts books show the -52A in the illustration. Apparently, it was changed slightly in 1957 for the Sportster. This one was advertised as a -52A.

Questions: what's the difference between the -52 and -52A? Big twins also had a rear pipe boot guard - was this used on the BT's or is that a different one? Does anyone have an accessory catalog showing this?

I think you'll find that the -52A isn't suitable for the K models, but should be good for Sporties. The difference is in the clips which are made for the (presumably) greater diameter of the Sportster pipes. The books are wrong stating it will fit Ks!

This is the issue I had but managed to acceptably modify the clips. This involved re-making the bend for the 'tongue' close to the chrome (this needed heat), shortening then shaping a new 'tongue', and removing the upstand on the loose half of the clips so that the two halves fit snug together (without separation due to the upstand). Although the radius isn't right it now fits firmly with 3-point contact on each - probably best for rust prevention!

It only just works out, but does.

The Big-Twin stuff were the slip-on flexible chrome tubes 65550-48 or boot guard for rear pipe (an oval chrome plate) 65700-38.

Early Sporty and K/KH have the same exhaust pipe diameter, 1"1/2...

I would think the diff between the 2 is the curve, K/KH and Sporty rear pipes are real different...

John R,

This topic goes back a while. I have 2 of these rear pipe guards that seem to be too big.

Do you have pictures of your modifications to make them fit a 1957 rear pipe?

Thanks for your help!

In my experience the 65700-52A works on both the 54-56 KH factory rear pipe and 57-65 Sportster factory 2 into 1 pipe. The mounting tabs for the screws go down for KH and flip it over with tabs up for Sportster. The 65700-52 seems to first appear in the 1956 accessory catalog. Maybe the 65700-52 was slightly altered for the new Sportster pipe so it could be used on both models.
