67 XLH Belly Numbers

Postby roadbum » Fri Dec 21, 2018 1:42 pm

The belly numbers on my 67 XLH start with 667 instead of 767. Also the ID number is about 4800 (72xx) more than the belly number.(2xxx) Haven't run across this before and curious as to why. Thank you.

The 67XLHs used the 667 belly prefix. I think the initial logic was it was a different motor. What is interesting is it appears in 68 they went back to the 768 prefix. I am unclear if it was a running change in 67 or a model year change in 68? Starting in the early 60s HD went to even VIN first numbers in even years and odd numbered VIN first numbers in odd years. I think Dave has a write up about this on the website, if not I'm sure someone will jump in with what year it started or if I have any of this wrong.

That's the first I've heard of that. I don't have a set of 66 H cases to check. Sounds weird to me.

Look at the casting dates. These might even be replacement cases ?

I seem to recall this conversation I had with someone years ago concerning this subject.

I own a very correct 67XLH, between my brother and I we know everyone who has owned the bike since new.

The cases have never split, I will see if I can crawl under it and let you know what I have.

With the Odd-Even stamping on cases the belly number runs about half as high as the VIN. The belly numbers are sequential, the VIN skips every other 1000.

Jerry, My belly numbers are 667 2490 which is 4 digits from yours. Is your ID number as far as mine from the belly number? Thank you guys for your information.

Hi Roadbum
The bike is one a friend sold a few years back. If you look at the first picture it shows the VIN. The first two digits of the VIN are the same as what you showed. I am curious about how close your vin and belly numbers are compared to the one I show. You don't have to be specific just are then within 5, 10 etc?
