From Paris, we now travel southeast about 700 km (435 mi) to the Alpes-Maritimes department in southeastern France. Cipières is a commune about 50 minutes drive from the French Riviera, and is an unspoilt medieval village of around 500 inhabitants. Bar-sur-Loup is a commune perched on a mountain spur overlooking the valley of the Loup (Wolf) river. Gourdon is another commune in the same department, perched high on a mountain with scenic panoramic views. Coursegoules is a smaller village in the same area. Nice, the capital of Alpes-Maritimes, is a city of about 1 million, and is located on the Cote d'Azur (French Riviera).
