How-To: QUOTE original in response

Postby hennesse » Thu Sep 27, 2018 12:03 pm

When you are browsing through a Topic, you see a button on the right of each posting marked QUOTE. What does that do? The short answer is: it will copy that message into your reply. The long answer...

Quote is often misused. Nobody wants to see multiple copies of the same message clogging up the forums. The proper use of QUOTE is to single out a particular sentence or something from a long posting.

Here's an example of proper use of QUOTE:
*** Please note: For this tutorial, I had to substitute the { and } in this write-up for the square brackets (on the same keyboard keys).

JoeUser writes a VERY LONG posting about clutches, wet v. dry plates, primary chains, chain adjustment, and other stuff. Somewhere in the middle he mentions "Sportsters have 7 sets of clutch discs, K-models have only 5".

Sally realizes Joe is wrong about that, and wants to clarify about K-models. So she clicks "Quote", and it copies JoeUser's entire message into Sally's reply. Sally sees it between {quote="JoeUser"} and {/quote} tags. She deletes all the copied text EXCEPT "Sportsters have 7 sets of clutch discs, K-models have only 5". After the [/quote] tag, she adds her clarification. So now Sally's message composition screen looks like this:

    {quote="JoeUser"} Sportsters have 7 sets of clutch discs, K-models have only 5 {/quote}
    Hey Mr. User, the 1954-1956 K-models have 7 sets also. Only the 1952-1953 Ks had 5 sets.

This will appear in her posting as below. Sally has singled out the one sentence in JoeUser's post that she wants to call attention to. And that's the proper way to use QUOTE. Good work Sally!

JoeUser wrote: Sportsters have 7 sets of clutch discs, K-models have only 5

Down next to the SUBMIT button is a PREVIEW button. When you click Preview, you will see a split screen - on the top half is what the message will actually look like when posted. The bottom half is the composition screen. I use this all the time to improve the look of my postings. Some of the special features - like Quote - add extra space above and below, and you might want to tighten things up to look better. Give it a try!
