Sportster Headlight Cover Plug

Postby bill pedalino » Fri Jul 10, 2020 1:22 pm

I believe that this is the last missing piece needed for my next judging.

I've been looking for the correct snap-in plug that covers the headlight adjuster stud/nut. The correct one for '64 has a flat area on top (perched) rather that the later domed covers.

If you have on for sale or trade, or know of a source, I would appreciate the help. I don't often get onto this Forum, so if you know of a source, please feel free to post here and text me at (516) 532-6322.

Thanks,

Never mind guys - Dave C. just advised that I have the correct (domed) cover. Sorry for the misfire.

Hopefully, three tries are a lucky charm...
I actually DO need the perched headlight adjuster cap - while the domed cap that I have is correct for my '64, I looked at my '70 and it needs the perched cover. If any one has one for sale or trade, or knows of a source, please advise.

Thanks,

If you haven't seen it yet, check out the 1969 XLCH on Craig list. https://harleykmodel.com/craigslist/index.html

I really can't clearly tell from the photo, but the 1969 appears to have the earlier headlight cap with the smooth, rounded dome and not the flattened top.

There's only 1 part number for these.

How many types of caps are there? Which caps fit which years?

there are 2 versions. both same part number.
early is "domed"
late is flat.
change happened between l65 to e 66.
anecdotally it appears 65 is domed, 66 is flat.

My understanding is that the later Sportsters had the domed cap. I'm not sure of the transition years, but 1965 sounds about right as my '64 has the flat cap and my 1970 needs a domed cap.

It occured to me after my last post and a conversation with my brother that i'm really not sure what i'm talking about. I mean as far as the terms people have been using. Which one are we calling the perched plug and what does that even mean? Which one is the domed plug? We now have images with my last post of the two in question so we can relate the terms once someone defines them for me to the 65 plug or the 68 plug. Language arts was never my strong suit.
