STARTER PROBLEM

Postby gabbyjon » Mon Oct 19, 2020 8:12 pm

What could be the cause?Iron head Sportster, each time I turn the ignition key to the on position the starter turns over without pushing the start button. Could it be caused by the relay? Or solenoid? it worked fine until this problem persisted. I believe I hear the solenoid kick in and then starter turn.

Check the starter button to see if it is stuck on or shorting.

Switch the large cables on the solenoid

The cable that comes from the battery (positive), goes on the longer stud. I think what is happening is when you turn the ignition on, the power is on to the starter.

Could also be the starter relay. If the points have welded together the starter will just keep spinning as soon as the power is switched on. I had this with an NOS relay once.
