Others more knowledgeable may chime in here, however if you are referring to the -58 Guide lamp, I believe the difference is the position of the drain hole due to XLCH/XLH mounting orientation.

The difference is in the mounting position. XLCH mounts from the top, XLH mounts from the bottom. This translates to the trim ring mounting 180 degrees different on each model. The hole for the tab on the trim ring is facing the same direction as the mounting stud for the XLCH, and 180 degrees away from the mounting stud on the XLH. Same with the drain hold and attachment point for the screw that holds the trim ring in place.

The drain hole is indeed different but not just between XLH and XLCH. Early XL and XLH have totally different sized headlights. The shell difference is between the XLCH and the H-D lightweight series bikes which mount from the bottom also, as the '59 up XLH uses. So lots of bottom mount shells around, but not many upper mount types.
