backing plates

Postby curiousgeorge » Fri Mar 17, 2017 10:13 pm

I bought a couple of rear brake backing plates at a local swapmeet. One has a -54 casting number on it and the other has a -54a on it. I`m curious what change there is to the 54a if any. With a quick glance I don`t see anything but these days I don`t always "look" so good. I had the plate on my 67 decide to become more than one piece so I need to replace my spare stock. Just curious.

The -54 side plate has a new part number in 1973 and again in 1975. The pivot stud also changed in 73. Check to see if the pivot stud hole is a different diameter or has a thicker or thinner boss.

Thanks for the info. I`ll have to measure some shafts. I`m guessing I found a one year only plate. 73 had the bolt type pivot pin but didn`t have the inspection holes. Learn something new every day, Thanks for the lesson.

Sure that "A" isn't an "R"? Does it have reinforcement in comparison to the -54 part?

No, it`s an A. It seems identical to the -54 except the pivot hole is larger. I`m guessing that it is a 73 plate but until I get a measurement I can`t be sure. I`m wondering if the bolt type pin is more secure than the earlier floating type.
