Saddle bags

Postby k1rider » Sun Oct 31, 2021 8:39 pm

Does anyone recognize this saddle bag?

Harley Davidson accessory?.....Bates?

They are leather and I hope I can salvage them but they are very dry and hard.

Not H-D, but a lot of aftermarket companies made bags for a variety of machines. How about some more pictures, the latches look different than most.
As for the leather, apply Glycerine to them repeatedly to soften. Stuff like Picards, Lexol, etc are good.Do not put Mink Oil or any of those so called waterproofing products on them, and nothing with silicone.

If it's vegetable leather, which it probably is, it can be formed using warm water.

Thanks for the replies.

They are real animal (cowhide) leather. I'm quite certain of that.

I am really wanting to restore them as they seem so appropriate the period.

I will get some more pics.

"Vegetable" refers to a process of tanning the cowhide. The result is stiff and holds it's shape.

Anyone dealing with saddles Cowboys) can help you with restoration products, I use "Dubbin's" but don't know if they sell it there.

Don't be sucked into using Neatsfoot oil - it rots the stitching.

I apply it several times leaving it in the sun to soak in properly. Use it on all my racing leathers as well.

For posterity, the subject bag appears to be a Buco Airflo bag, PN 1000-K.
