You use 4 total pieces as the Spares book shows- the stepped left-most one in the clutch, 2 more 3/16" dia rods plus the 1/4" dia rod in the clutch worm release lever.
hd54kh wrote:As in the new picture I now have the four totaling 12.355, is there a total length standard that I should have or can I measure what I actually need?

Just assemble it as described above and see where the final 1/4" dia piece comes out in the worm release lever. There has to be adequate room to installer the adjuster in the worm release lever. That's all there is to it.

Thanks for the coaching. I'm feeling better already. Sometime tonight or in the AM I'll fit it up and see how else I can confuse myself and report back.

Yes the right clutch rod is .250 diameter.
But here's one for you guys.
We have apart a unmolested 59 Ch that doesn't have the 1.19 length left clutch rod at all.
this bike only has 3 clutch rods.
Instead the long clutch rod is 1.19 longer. It's the only bike I've ever seen like this.
And it sure looks to be factory. We will post pictures as soon as we can.

Here are some right release rod dimensions, that might be helpful, from a given K model having 3 other clutch release rods of unknown length in it and a Barnett wet clutch. The right rod (custom cut length from 0.250” drill rod) is 3.107" long, it protrudes from the end of the tranny main shaft 1.080”, and with the sprocket nut in place and tightened the rod protrudes from the tin shield on the sprocket nut 0.910”. The adjuster screw in the clutch release worm for this particular set-up is shown below along with the release rod protrusion from the sprocket nut. Hope this helps with sorting your set-up.

Hi all, I'm back. Sorry about my sudden hiatus but between the holiday and some elder care time gets away. I need to revisit my clutch rod situation. Some how I have more length than needed.

Not sure of where I left off but quick question. How far does the the "T" rod on the far left fit inside the main shaft? If I fit all the rods in and put the right side cover on it pushes the "T" rod way out so that it just barely starts the thicker dimension into the main shaft. So can I install the T rod until it bottoms out and than calculate the rest of the distance to the adjusting screw?

Hi All, I think I understand what the problem is with the rods. Terry I believe your left end release rod is part of an Oil Seal Extension Kit, PN 37465-56, that first appears in the 59PB for use on 52-56Ks. It was used with the clutch gears oil seal extension. Se below for an image of the -54 clutch gear with and without the extension. I'm guessing you are trying to use it with a clutch gear without the extension?

The image below shows the dimensions for an original stock 54- up to VIN 1465 in 56 left end release rod and the dimensions of a -56 from VIN 1465 on release rod. If you compare the dimensions with yours you will see it has the left end -56 diameter to fit the oil seal extension and the right end diameter to fit your -53A mainshaft.

Finally a picture of my 54KHK showing the installed kit and your left end release rod.

Well eventually made it back to working on it. I just did the math and it all worked out. I wound up eliminating the small .950 log rod dry fit it all and wound up with about 3/4 of an inch protruding out the right side sprocket end. Everything seems ok but will have to wait to activate it once I get the bars and cable installed.

Got to thank the brain trust here for helping me thru my confusion. I can only think of what a true basket case is like to sort out. I don't know where the transient .950 rod came from but all is well. At least with all your help here more details, work arounds and documentation might help others such as myself.

Now onto the next issue.....Electrics
