Clutch release rod length

Hey all, does this order of my clutch release rods look right? Not sure of the actual measurement of each and sequence to install them. I do have a NOS long one but according to the diagram the part number shows as the right center shorter length. Anyone have these measurements for me to compare?
Thanks in advance
Terry

Thank you Dr. D

I mimicked your picture and this is what I have in the 54KH. Adds up to be about .14 thousands short but should be good.

Just curious, in your image the right release rod is labeled as 0.196" dia. I believe the right release rods were always 0.250 dia, with the possible exception of very early Ks. Will your transmission main shaft receive a 0.250" dia actuator shaft or tail end of a 1/4" drill stub? If so that's the shaft size you need for the right hand piece. Look forward to hearing what dia right piece the main shaft will receive.

I agree with wz507. The far right rod that goes into the sprocket cover worm gear needs to be 0.250" in diameter. The hole in the worm gear that said rod fits into is just over 0.250". You wouldn't want a smaller diameter in there as it would certainly cause the rod to tip and therefore possibly bind. Also the 0.950 x 0.196 you show is way to short. You can see in the picture you posted of the parts book diagram, the 37282-53 is way longer then the short second from the left 37281-47.
I have a drawer with some of these rods in it. I have a left, left middle and right middle that are the same dimensions that you give. One 0.250" rod is in there and it measures 2.760" x 0.247". I can't say for sure if this is correct it's just what's in the drawer. This could very well be a Sportster one. The link that Dr Dick posted shows K to 69 XLCH as being 0.250" x 1.635". That seems more likely to me for a KH.

Another wild card is I have two different length far left rods that go into the clutch releasing disc. One measures 3.042" the other 2.642" Is one a Sportster and one a K?

Good luck, I know this is confusing as I was confused when I did my two restorations but some how it all worked out.

Too simplify the hunt for the correct length right release rod, it’s very simple to just lathe-cut a length of ¼” drill rod (provides square rod ends) to suit your particular situation (as was noted in the link Dr Dick provided). With the worm release lever mounted in the kicker cover and return spring attached, the spring should pull the release lever all the way rearward against the roll-pin stop. Install the cover and determine the distance between the middle right rod end and the outer edge of the release lever worm (tail of a dial caliper, piece of welding rod, etc). Decide how far you intend to have the adjuster screwed into the release lever worm (half way?), subtract this distance from the total distance measured previously and cut your right release rod to finish the job. Now you have a “custom made” clutch release rod set-up that is perfect for your specific machine.

Hi Stan, I think the answer to your odd left end release rod is found in the 59 PB, 37465-56, clutch gear oil seal kit 52-56. I have this set up in my 54K. The version Dave has on the website of the Transmission Bulletin is one behind, not his fault, I haven't sent him the latest. The one he has posted shows my 54K and the left end release rod that I believe you are referring to. At the time I wrote it I was not aware of the kit, the latest version has this mystery updated and solved.

Good morning all, I did some more digging and found the .250 far right rod. Looking in the parts book I was working on the premise of three rods. Now I have four??

The new found rod is 2.785 long with a diameter of .248 so it seems like I'm good to go with the worm gear end and of course the T rod on the far left is good now how to fill it in between.

As in the new picture I now have the four totaling 12.355, is there a total length standard that I should have or can I measure what I actually need?

This is all being installed in a 54KH with a 7 disc clutch if that matters.
