Fork 55 KH

Postby Onslow » Sat Dec 31, 2022 12:57 pm

Greetings- Onslow seems to be a 1955 KH. He is pre-dis-assembled, but ran when parked in 83.
this starts the grand adventure of making Onslow run. We look at the forks second. We started with the oil tank and some imaginative welding.

Our manuals show modern fork legs with a long small diameter spring on the inside of the fork leg.
Onslow’s fork legs have large diameter springs on the OUTSIDE of the leg.
Manual shows a rubber boot on the forks, Onslow has steel shroud around the big spring.
We fear this is the wrong forks; we hope it is a rare original…
May we have some input please?

H-D never used an external spring fork, it sounds like you may have Norton or BSA forks on it.

Hi Onslow, if you are doing a 55KH your fork tubes need to be about 21 & 7/8". The earlier K tubes would be 22 & 7/8". In addition, you will need the 52-67 lower fork sliders. You will also need all of the fork tube internals. These front-end parts are frequently on Ebay. Best of luck with your project.

Hi Onslow,

Are you looking for “concours” restoration forks or just good, serviceable, period accurate KH forks ?
Chrome pieces or OEM condition ?

Tim The Grim - Function over Form! The bike lived a hard life and we want to get it going; Onslow will not be a 'trailer-queen'. We are sure that there will be more issues in the future, so the goal is reasonable completion and not perfection.
