I have that book and just never thought about checking production numbers there! Thanx for the heads up.
This graph is something that you have manufactured? Thanx for sharing

It's just like Dorothy and the Ruby Slippers – it was only a click away the entire time.

The graph comes from this website. It can be found on the home page right below the model descriptions. " Production figures for the K and XL models can be found here"

Yes, and you should DO AS THE WEBSITE SAYS:

You really, really need to own a copy of the wonderful book The Legend Begins.
You can purchase it (part number 99403-93) from your local Harley-Davidson dealer. MSRP is $45.

Just this morning, Perry Ruiter and I were discussing the mysterious 67717-48A headlamp bulb - a bulb so rare that no one has ever seen one!.

We turned to the Spare Parts Catalogs, available on this website. And to The Legend Begins. And Palmer's How To Restore Your Harley-Davidson. And eBay. ...looking for clues to the mystery. We didn't find the Golden Goose, but we found some interesting examples of other K/XL headlamps. More later.

The point is: Once you own a copy of TLB, you will wonder why it took you so long!

On that chart, KRMs should be 53 only. KHRM also produced in 54. Curious about the single KHR in 55. I had the left case of a 55 KHR, and like the XLRTT the KHRTT cases would have only been stamped "KHR". I have a 61 XLRTT, and believe that year was the highest production. They were produced at least until 1970, with the final production only engines IIR.

"The Legend Begins" is littered with mistakes, and much information has been uncovered in the years since it was published. Like most books it is just a reference point but diligence is needed to weed out the real information.

The production numbers on the book's chart are based off the Harley Davidson quarterly reports. The numbers reflect calendar year production as opposed to model year production. Production for a particular model year begins in July or August of the previous year and ends in May or June of the model year. I have an extensive collection of the Race Department records for individual motorcycle production and they do not align with the chart. The only way to verify the production of a particular model within a particular model year would be to have access to the Harley production logs and manually count the motorcycles in question. There is no record of a KHR or XLR motorcycle being produced in spite of information published on this site.
