Borrani rims

Postby xlh59 » Fri Jan 10, 2020 3:38 pm

Hi All,

does anyone know, when the first Borrani rims appeared on the KR race bikes? I am aware, that Borrani became OEM supplier in 1960, but the WM rims have been around before. It seems very natural, that Harley introduced them because others ort privateers have been using them before?

Any comments appreciatet

Best,
ralf

The earliest we see the WM3 Borrani alloy rims as an option for KRs is the 1961 order.
Harley sourced the Borranis from their Aermacchi subsidiary
Prior to the availabilty of the Borranis both Dunlop and Weinmann alloy rims were used.
Dunlops have a high side and Weinmanns come in both high and low sides depending on the period.

Which of these alloy rim makers didn't mark their rims externally? My bike is is a 62 with some aftermarket sheet metal and some earlier front end parts, but the wheels seem to be original with high shouldered rims, but there are no maker markings on them, were all stock original rims externally marked?
Ive wondered

There are no external markings on the Harley/Borranni alloy rims. If you remove the tire there will be a HD part number stamped on one side of the rim valley.

In the 60s racers had the choice of Borrani rims from Harley, Cosmopolitan Motors, TriCor, JoMo, Hap Alzina and BSA East. I am sure there were others. The non Harley Borrani rims are externally marked. Some Harley rims are externally marked such as the XRTT front rims. Other rims came from Weinmann (marked in the valley), Dunlop (marked), San Remo (decal), and Akront (decal and spoke count). The Harley CRTTs came with Borranis standard as did the 1970 Iron XR750 and the 1972 Alloy XR750. The Harley Borrani rims were optional on the KR dirt tracker beginning with 1961. We prefered the Akronts which were slightly heavier but by far the strongest and least likely to bend.

The factory Borrani rims for Sportsters came in many variations, 18" or 19" for half brake hubs, 18" or 19" for full width hubs, 18" for rear use, 18" rear factory drilled for tire lock screws, and the "-61R" rim for racers, plus a version (36 hole) for the off road Lightweights (Scat, Ranger, Bobcat). And then there are the deep center '70 up styles as well.
The marking appear like this:

thanks for all the useful info ... my main question has not been answered, though.

The borrani rims have been used on some bikes in the 50s already, and Harley did definately just use the opportunity to offer them as well. So my question was, when did the borrani rims appear on the track? Is it possible that a racer would put some borranis on his bike in (lets say) 1954? I think I have seen bikes with alloy 21" rims, right? I have also never seen a 54R front brake with steel rim (apart from the 54KHRTT in the gallery) ...

Would have the Borrani rims needed a specific AMA approval? (If not sold from Harley)

Greetings,
Ralf
