Dave,

It's been known and reported from time to time, alas not that often...

Happened to me once on the KHK, t'was a nearly fractured front mount.

Since then, b*gger OEM stuff, all my tanks are rubber insulated via the fixing bolts ( bigger hole, rubber sleeve and rubber washers on each side of the sleeve plus oversized steel washers), it helps both noise insulation and vibration damage.

My guess is the KH/KHK cams are quite violent and will induce these harmonics.

Badly balanced or OEM balanced engines also comes to mind, the factory balance is averaged, not individual.

Since my bikes are always long term partnerships, I always have the flywheels rebalanced to my personal taste at the earliest opportunuity.

As I said, good damping with pipe insulation foam (the round kind, like a slotted tube when you buy it) is the near perfect answer.

Do not fit it loose, put plenty on top tube so it's actually quite a push to fit the tank in the right position...

Another factory a parte… It has always amazed me that they would efficiently rubber mount the oil tank, little weight... and not the BIG gas one which has plenty more inertia potential...
