Spoke Lengths

Postby JerrryR » Tue Mar 09, 2021 12:36 am

Hi All,
I need some help with a little research project. I tried to see what I have in the way of spokes and realized I was a little lost. I have included a table listing spokes and nipples that appear in the parts books between 52 and 72. The PBs only list lengths for a few. I’m hoping we can come up with the lengths for the rest. As I sorted mine by approximate length I found I had the following:
All of the following spokes are the “fatter ones”, not the skinny front wheel spokes used 52-63.
• 6 & 1/16
• 8 & 1/16
• 8 & 1/8
• 8 & 3/8
• 8 & 7/16
• 8 & ½
• 8 & 9/16
• 9
I have the skinny front spoke lengths for the 19” rim used with the half break through 63 but I don’t have the lengths for the 18” front rim spokes.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide with any of the listed spoke lengths.

Hi All,
I’m not sure if I am measuring my spokes the standard way or not so for some clarity this is how I have been doing it. From very tip to very tip.
Thanks again in advance for any help you can provide with what the different spoke lengths are. If there is a more standard way of measuring them please let me know.

Hi All Again,
Sorry to be bombarding your email but it became apparent in order to discuss length we need to all be doing it the same way. JR from England and Bob E were kind enough to provide some measuring method feedback. JR provided a document from Buchanan for how to measure spokes, it is the last picture shown below. The 59 Parts Book shows the 43027-52 spoke at 6 & 1/8” and the 43028-52 at 8 & ½ “. If I measure these spokes from the end of the threads to the red line it measures very close to what the 59PB states. The 71 Parts Book gives the lengths of 43027-52 at 6” and 43028-52 at 8 & 3/8”. If I measure from the end of the threads to the blue line it measures very close to what was given in the 71PB. Measuring to the blue line also appears to be the method Buchanan uses. It seems to me as though HD changed their method of measuring at some point and was doing the same as Buchanan. Unless someone can tell me with confidence how HD measured the spokes I am going to start using the Buchanan Method for consistency, measuring to the blue line. Does anybody have any part number verified spokes they can measure and share the length?
Thanks,
JerryR

Hi Jerry,

My rim is 18" shallow drop, dimpled. Measured to the blue line method, the short spoke (43027-53) is 5-3/8" and the long spoke (43028-53) is 8-3/16". As mentioned in an earlier post, I'm in need on one short spoke if anybody is holding. Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike and Rubone, I may be able to help you both. I've been digging through my spokes and trying to organize the data I collect from them in an effort to understand what I'm looking at when at swap meets. Following is a part of the project, the portion related to the front half break spokes used from 52 through 63. I also include a picture of what I believe the short front 18" rim spoke looks like and the to me mysterious 9" spoke. I will eventually need a set of the half break 18" rim spokes but as of now I only have 16 of the shorts so having only 15 is about the same, I'll send you one Mike if you still need it. Somehow I have acquired a bunch of beautiful cad plated 9" spokes, what are they for? If you need 4 Rubone I can send you them. Rubone even if you no longer need them I am interested in their application. They take the -29 nipple.

Thanks
