Sportsters and K's at Oley 2017

I am sharing this report that I posted on another Sportster online forum:

Every April an AMCA national meet is held in Oley, PA, and it is by far my favorite motorcycle-related event of the year. Oley, PA is a gorgeous 115 mile round-trip ride from my house, which makes just getting there a good time. The swap meet is huge, and the meet is always filled with amazing antique motorcycles that you would be hard pressed to find anyplace else. If you are able to make the trip, I highly recommend it!

Weather permitting, I attend all three days of Oley, making the trip each day on a different bike. I was so excited to get my 1964 XLCH fired up and rolling toward Oley on Thursday morning that I couldn't even hang around long enough for a photo!

Now let me start right off with the coolest thing that I saw all weekend. We all know that an early Sportster that still has it's factory original paint job is a rare bird. I would argue that they may fall on the list of rarest motorcycles in the WORLD! These bikes were beat on, customized, and repainted from new, so very few of them still exist.

However, at Oley this year there were TWO all original (including paint) 1960 Sportsters parked side by side! Fifty seven years after they were built, we reunited an XLH and XLCH from the same year at Oley for all to see.

This may be the greatest thing I have ever seen in real life, and if you weren't at Oley, you may have missed your chance.

Seeing good friends from the XL Forum is always a nice part of Oley.

Although he wasn't riding a Sportster this year, I met up with 16ouncePBR on his 1969 FLH for most of the ride out to Oley on Friday. Here we are stopped at out favorite breakfast spot in the Oley area:

It was also great to finally see Monte03's gorgeous 1968 XLH in person (loaded down with camping gear!)

And of course, no one can miss Dr. Dick's recognizable tie-died shirt while inspecting the 1960 XLCH:

Do you like original paint early Sportsters? Well, here is forum member 16ouncePBR sticking' it to the man by ignoring the written instructions to NOT touch the all-original, twin carb 1959 XLCH brought by Murph1068:

There's no way that anyone would show up with an original paint Sportster older than Murph's 1959, right? WRONG! Check out this all-original, one-owner 1958 XLH:

Now there are cool bikes, and then there are the COOLEST bikes. This one was the coolest at Oley. Maybe one of the coolest bikes I have ever seen. Seriously!

But there is always Oley 2018! I'm sure it will be another fantastic event, so start making your plans now...only 364 days to go!!!

Here is the kind of scenery in the area as I took a brief stop on my 1960 XLH:

I had a great time and already can't wait until next year. It was great to get a chance to spend time with so many good guys from the XL Forum, and see all the incredible bikes.

Thanks for reading,
