Having those supplements is terrific hugoct. Thanks for sharing the info and taking the time to scour and cross reference through them.
Would the new 1960 models start to be assembled during the winter period of 1959?

1961 is typical
First 61 KR is 07/18/60
Last 61 KR is 06/22/61
First 61 Sportster XLRTT is 07/18/60
Last 61 Sportster XLRTT is 06/19/61
KRs and all model Sportsters for many years pulled from the same range of numbers for a given model year.

Just to keep things going here...Recently bought an XLR project that has a rebuilt engine but someone needed the vin and they shaved it off. Been looking for a set of cases and just bought an old hillclimber with 61XLR1044 cases. Roger Reed last raced it in Northern California. The engine may have run at Bonneville around 1980 in another chassis. Possible Knight custom frame, possibly ran nitro, mechanical injection, etc. now I’m not sure i want to part it oit and may be back to square one haha. Plus i still am looking for a heavy -R frame...

61XLR1044 is worthy of the investment of time and money for a restoration.
The 61 XLRs get all the go fast aluminum pieces without the POS DeCarbon shocks.
Send me a picture of the serial number and crankcase numbers and I can verify original or replacement cases, mag serial number, cam type, transmission as shipped, order number, assembly date, and dealer shipped to. This one if it is the real deal should be restored.

Can i text or email it to you? The forum doesn’t like iphone size photos. They added a fabricated bolt on sump to the bottom of the cases like a later XR so no belly numbers unfortunately. I have most all the aluminum bits for it except a rear fender. I have a 52/53 (from what i have been told) long KR rear fender that i would trade. I know you have said there are 20 something versions of the race frames, but would like a heavy -R frame.

You want a-52R (heavy) frame with the -57R steering head casting.
If you can find an early CH frame the footpeg mount casting and -57R steering head casting are available from Jeff Willis at MC Castings..

Bill I can’t thank you enough for the info about my nee XLR when it left the factory!!
61XLR1044
Crankcase # 18
Built 10/3/60
DC11 Carb
P cams
Shipped to Sam Arena H-D San Jose, CA

I’ve done a lot of research about Sam Arena in the past and love that this bike went through his dealership new. Guess i also need a DC11 carb as well as an aluminum fender haha.

Yeah I’ve thought of making a frame but didn’t know someone was making the -57R neck. I’d much prefer real after coming from the world of ever faked knuckleheads but we’ll see.
