Website Changes a'coming - May/June 2021

Postby hennesse » Mon May 03, 2021 10:29 pm

Remember the login-over-and-over problem? We fixed it a month ago - and it has stayed fixed!

This was a tough nut to crack, as it seemed nobody else in the universe had reported a similar problem. It took many months to locate the two or three people who had, and finally, a solution was at hand. It took all of three minutes to apply the fix to our website. 30 days later, and no reported problems - Victory is Ours !!!

We had already planned a number of changes to the site, but haven't done them because of the login problem. That's been solved, so now it's time.

1) Secure Sockets Layer - httpS://

This encrypts all traffic between you and the web server. Good news - you won't even notice. You will still be able to type "www.harleyKmodel.com" into your browser, and the webserver will answer. But the man behind the curtain will silently transmogrify your: http://www.harleyKmodel.com into the Secure: httpS://www.harleyKmodel.com

No action will be required on your part.

We will make this change sometime in May 2021 - we'll notify you in advance.

2) Forum Software Update

When we started the website in 2014, we picked the last version of the Forum software package which supported our almost unique get-an-email-on-every-posting feature. This feature is wonderful for small groups like ours, where (almost) everyone is interested in (almost) every posting. But it would be totally insane on a high-traffic website, like XLforums, or the AMCA. Unfortunately, phpBB stopped supporting that feature, and all newer versions don't have it. So we've been stuck in the past.

We're used to that, since our Ks and Sportsters are 50+ years old. But our stuck-in-the past Forum software depends on lower-level, and equally-stuck, software thingies. Eventually, some old version of something will become totally obsolete and unavailable. We need to move into the present so we're ready for the future.

We've engineered some simple modifications to the NEWEST version of the Forum software, which runs on the NEWEST versions of the lower-level packages. Our mods implement the highly-coveted get-an-email-on-every-posting feature. Unfortunately, we've put off this upgrade for so long, it's gonna be a long tedious exercise in manual labor, and may involve multiple days' downtime for the Forums. Our fingers are not longing to tickle the genuine imitation ivories of the keyboard for hours on end.

We will make the change sometime in June 2021 - we'll notify you in advance.

---
We may prefer to stand still, but the world keeps changing around us. Hang on, lest you fall off.

5/14/2021 9:25 am - The SECURE (SSL) protocol upgrade has completed successfully.

No action is required on your part. When you access the website, you will automatically be using the secure https:// protocol.
