55 KHK shock disassembly

Postby rmcveigh » Sun Jan 07, 2024 3:04 am

I am struggling to dismantle my covered shocks, managed to push cam pin in and remove bottom sections, cams & springs so I am left with the shock piston & cover, seemingly the upper eye should be threaded onto the shock piston rod & can be unscrewed, thus allowing the rod to be pulled free of the cover for stripping/rechroming. I cannot get the upper eye loose, can't clamp or secure the rod to then apply more pressure to the eye to break it free ? Suggestions or advice ?

The can is held on there by the rubber grommet you see there. Gently work that out it may need WD40 and some time but it will pull out. Once out it is a split grommet which comes off the piston. The grommet has a bead and the can has a groove which holds it in there.
